England Disgrace

On 2 March 2015, Adam Johnson was arrested on suspicion of having sexual activity with a 15-year-old girl. Durham Police said the 27-year-old was questioned at Peterlee Station close to his Castle Eden home and later bailed. Sunderland AFC said the player had been suspended pending the outcome of the police investigation, his suspension was lifted on 18 March, whilst he was officially charged with three counts of sexual activity with a minor and one offence of grooming, on 23 April. He appeared before Peterlee Magistrates Court on 18 May where he was released on conditional bail and the case upgraded, entering a 'Not Guilty' plea at Durham Crown Court on 3 June. His trial was due to take place from 24 August, delayed until 10 February 2016 at Bradford Crown Court.
On the opening day of his trial, Johnson pleaded guilty to 'one count of sexual activity with a child and one count of grooming'. Still denying two further accounts of underage sex. The trial, lasting sixteen days, was presided over by His Honorable Judge Jonathan Rose. Johnson's barrister Orlando Pownall QC revealed the 28-year-old had been 'stripped of his England appearances' as a result of the offences. On 2 March, with a majority verdict of 10-2, Johnson was found guilty on one count of sexual activity, and not guilty on the second count.
On 24 March 2016, Johnson was sentenced to six years imprisonment and ordered to pay £50,000 towards the prosecution's legal fees.
During the course of the investigation and subsequent trial, Johnson lost his endorsement with Adidas, and had his avatar removed from the FIFA 16 video game by EA Sports.
Johnson spent his sentence at HMP Moorland near Doncaster, and was released on 22 March 2019.
