The 1968
European Championship tournament, the third staging of the Henri Delauney
Trophy, held by UEFA.
It was dependent on Italy reaching the semi-finals
for the final phase of this tournament to be held in that country. It was
revealed in January 1968 that the second choice country, should Italy fail to
advance, was to be Scotland. When England beat Scotland to the final phase the
following month, then the second choice became England's.
