Background |
UEFA
awarded The 1980
European Championship tournament, the sixth staging of the UEFA European
Championships, to Italy on 12 November 1977.
On 17 October
1977, England, Greece, Italy, Netherlands, Switzerland and West Germany
had all expressed an interest in hosting the tournament. However, two days
later, the Organizing Committee decided to assign the hosting to England
or Italy, favouring the Italians as England had hosted the World Cup only
eleven years previously.
