Background |
The UEFA Nations League was unanimously adopted at the XXXVIII
Ordinary UEFA Congress in Astana on 27 March 2014.
The format
for the third UEFA Nations League will again feature promotion and
relegation. The 55 European national teams have been divided into four
leagues in accordance with UEFA's first Nations League project.
League A includes the top-ranked sides, including
England, and League D includes the lowest.
Teams will be split
into three groups of four and two groups of four or three, with the group winners then contesting the
UEFA Nations League Finals (semi-finals, third-place match and final)
in June 2023 to become the third UEFA Nations League winners. One host
country will be appointed from among the finalist
teams.
The draw took place behind closed doors on Thursday, 16
December 2021 at the headquarters of UEFA in Nyon, Switzerland. League
A was drawn by Robert Pires. On 28 February 2022, Russia were
suspended from all UEFA competition matches. On 2 May, they were
placed in fourth place of Group Two of League B with no matches
permitted.
