Match Report |
|
A
numerous company witnessed this match; the second this season between
the above teams, played at Bramall-lane, on Saturday afternoon, under
Association rules. The game ended in a victory for the South by two
goals to one. - The Times - Monday
21st
March, 1881
Note -
No details have been found for another North v. South fixture played in
the 1880-81 season, though the newspaper may have been referring to the
rugby fixture between the two, played on December 20th, 1880. Both games
were considered to be football, distinguished by either Association or
Rugby Union rules.

Source Notes
|
All additional names and date of
births are taken from census and registration details.
Albert Ernest Sorby was the only A.E.
Sorby who was born around that time. As for T.H. Fletcher, the
Sheffield born defender can be one of two, either Thomas Henry, born in
the winter of 1857, or a possible Thomas Howard, born in September 1863,
making him seventeen. Not unlikely, but we have gone with the
former. Frank Herbert Marsden is the only F.H. born in the Sheffield
area in the correct time period.
Again, the only E.H. Topham born in
the correct era was Edwin Henry. The only L. Keyser was a 24
year-old Leonard B. in Buckinghamshire.
