Diary

Tuesday, 15 May 1984 - Bobby Robson's international luck goes from bad to worse. Already robbed of a dozen top players because of injury, the England manager named a squad of 21 for the matches against Scotland and Russia, and within minutes learned that QPR's midfielder John Gregory is a doubtful starter because of a groin injury.  To add to his problems, Bryan Robson, Ray Wilkins and Mike Duxbury fly to Hong Kong this weekend for a friendly with Manchester United. They will return to link up with the England squad next Tuesday. Gregory, meanwhile, will see a specialist today, and if he is ruled out, Robson will likely call up Manchester United player Remi Moses, who again, will be in Hong Kong this weekend.
England's problem's mean Robson is forced to bring in two new faces, West Bromwich Albion's Steve Hunt and Tottenham midfielder Mike Hazard. Trevor Francis and Luther Blissett will return from Italy for the two games, but are unavailable for the summer trip to South America. To cover this, Robson adds Alan Kennedy, Sammy Lee, Terry Butcher, Paul Walsh, Mark Hateley, Dave Watson and Nigel Callaghan.

Tuesday, 22 May 1984 - Bobby Robson has learned today that Mark Wright, Tony Woodcock and John Gregory are all doubtful for the match against Scotland as they are suffering with various knocks. Trevor Francis has also gone down with food-poisoning, being so ill, he is unable to leave his home in Italy. However, Manchester United trio of Robson, Wilkins and Duxbury, have all returned from Hong Kong without incident. There may be a recall for Liverpool's central defender, Phil Thompson, if the situation does not improve.

Wednesday, 23 May 1984 - Bobby Robson has abandoned hope of having Trevor Francis fit. "I spoke to Trevor today on the phone today and he is still most unwell. I don't think he will even bother travelling to Scotland."
John Gregory has been ruled out because of a groin injury. Southampton's Mark Wright has been sent home to have an ex-ray on his injured ankle which is threatening to deprive him of a place on the South American tour.
Dave Watson, Norwich's central defender, will play for the under-21 team in their European Championship final against Spain at Bramall Lane tonight, but he has been put on standby for the senior squad in case there are any more injuries.
