Diary
Wednesday,
19 May 2010 - Algeria's Hameur Bouazza says he is shocked at being left
out of his country's preliminary World Cup squad.
The Blackpool winger was overlooked despite being one of
Algeria's few established goalscorers. Coach Rabah Saadane drafted in
three uncapped former French junior internationals, leaving no place for the
more established Bouazza.
"I've got nothing against the new
players but I'm disappointed with the manager, The manager did not call me
or come to see me to explain things to me like a professional. I have
always worked hard for Algeria - I feel like I have been hit with a baseball
bat. I've been through things with them - I should be with the squad and I
am not."
Wednesday,
2 June 2010 - Algeria coach Rabah Saadane has dropped goalkeeper Mohamed
Zemmamouche from the Desert Foxes' squad for the World Cup. He is only
member of the original 25-man party to be axed, although Lazio midfielder Mourad
Meghni misses out because of injury. Sadaane had five reserve players on
standby, but none is required to make the trip. Algeria are in Group C
along with the United States, Slovenia and England, who they face in Cape Town
on 18 June. The squad list includes nine players who have switched
their allegiance to the north African country after previously being capped at
junior level by France. There are only three home based players and none
from newly crowned league champions Mouloudia Alger.
Thursday,
10 June 2010 - Algeria captain Yazid Mansouri has been dropped for their
opening World Cup match against Slovenia on Sunday. The 32-year-old
hard-tackling midfielder will be replaced by Hassan Yebda, who will be joined in
the centre of midfield by French-born Medhi Lacen. Coach Rabah Saadane has
handed the captaincy to defender Antar Yahia. Yahia, 28, is best known for
the stunning volley that secured Algerian their World Cup ticket when they beat
Egypt 1-0 in a play-off in November. Saadane, the only African coach at
the first World Cup on the continent, stated that his selection had to be based
on form and that meant taking tough decisions in the interests of the team.
Sunday,
13 June 2010 - Algeria lose their opening World Cup match - losing 1-0 to
Slovenia. Abdelkader Ghezzal is sent-off following two yellow cards.
