Diary

Monday, 12 May 2014 - Oscar Tabarez has named his provisional 25-man 2014 World Cup squad. Newcomers in the squad include Southampton midfielder Gaston Ramirez, centre back José Maria Gimenez and his Atlético Madrid team-mate Cristian Rodriguez. Also in line for their first World Cup are Lanus defender Alejandro Silva and forwards Abel Hernandez of Palermo and Christian Stuani of Espanyol. As expected the forward line includes the star trio of Luis Suarez, Edinson Cavani  and Diego Forlan.

Thursday, 22 May 2014 - Luis Suarez has injured his knee in training and could be a doubt for the World Cup, according to media reports in the country. The 27-year-old will have keyhole surgery on Thursday to repair damage to his meniscus, says Uruguayan broadcaster Tenfield. Recovery normally takes between 15 and 20 days, adds the report.

Friday, 30 May 2014 - Uruguay laboured to a narrow win over a gutsy Northern Ireland side in Montevideo. Christian Stuani's close-range strike in the 62nd minute gave the South Americans victory in front of more than 50,000 fans at the Estadio Centenario. Uruguay fielded a near full-strength team, the only notable absentees being Liverpool's Luis Suarez, who is recovering from a knee injury, and Atlético Madrid defender Diego Godin.

Saturday, 31 May 2014 - Luis Suarez has been included in Uruguay's final 23-man squad for the World Cup as he continues his recovery from a knee operation. The in-form Liverpool striker underwent keyhole surgery on 22 May after damaging the meniscus in his left knee and immediately doubts were cast on whether he would be fit for the World Cup. However, Uruguay remain cautiously optimistic that Suarez, who is said to be progressing well following the operation, will be able to feature in Brazil.  The two players who have been cut from Tabarez's 25-man provisional squad are Palmeiras midfielder Sebastian Eguren and Lanus defender Alejandro Silva.

Wednesday, 4 June 2014 - Uruguay wrapped up preparations for the FIFA World Cup with a 2-0 win against Slovenia in a friendly at the Estadio Centenario. Edinson Cavani and substitute Christian Stuani were on target in each half in Montevideo as Uruguay extended their unbeaten streak on home soil.

Wednesday, 11 June 2014 - Luis Suarez is working overtime to be fit for the World Cup as he recovers from knee surgery, says Uruguay team-mate Cristian Rodriguez. Uruguay open their Group D campaign against Costa Rica on Saturday, but coach Oscar Tabarez does not know when Suarez will be available.

Saturday, 14 June 2014 - Uruguay open their World Cup playing Costa Rica. Luis Suarez remains on the bench as they lose to Costa Rica 3-1, despite taking a first half lead through a Cavani penalty. Maxi Pereira was sent off in injury time for a callous challenge and is suspended.

Wednesday, 18 June 2014 - Luis Suarez declares himself fit for tomorrow's must win match against England. However, Captain Diego Lugano has injured his knee and will miss the match.
