Diary

Friday, 11 November 2022 - Head Coach Félix Sánchez has announced his squad to 26 players for the World Cup Finals in Senegal.

Tuesday, 15 November 2022 - Sadio Mané will miss Senegal's "first games" at the World Cup because of a leg injury, an official from the country's football federation has said. The Bayern Munich forward was named in the Teranga Lions squad for Qatar despite being forced off in a club game last week. The German champions said the 30-year-old had an injury "to his right fibula", but Senegal coach Aliou Cisse said Mane does not need an operation.

Thursday, 17 November 2022 - Sadio Mané is ruled out of the World Cup tournament after failing to recover from a knee injury he picked up in the Bundesliga last week.

Tuesday, 20 November 2022 - Anderlecht's Moussa Ndiaye is set for a World Cup debut after being called into Senegal's squad on the eve of their first match. The 20-year-old left-back has been called up as Sadio Mane's replacement after it was confirmed that the star forward would miss the World Cup through injury. Ndiaye has been part of Senegal's Under-20 & Under-23 teams but has never been called into the senior national team.
Sadio Mané has had surgery on the knee injury that ruled him out of the World Cup. Last week, Senegal said he would miss their "first games" at the tournament, but a further MRI scan on Thursday showed an operation was needed. Mane, 30, suffered the injury during Bayern Munich's win over Werder Bremen on 8 November. Bayern said he had "successful surgery" today to attach a tendon to the head of his right fibula. "The forward will begin his rehab in Munich in the next few days," they said.

Wednesday, 21 November 2022 - Two late goals from the Netherlands sealed an important victory in their World Cup opener against Senegal in Group A. Cody Gakpo beat Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy to the ball when it was chipped in by Frenkie de Jong to nod the Dutch in front with six minutes remaining. Substitute Davy Klaassen then pounced on a rebound from Memphis Depay's shot to add a second deep into stoppage-time to confirm the success. Senegal, who had threatened throughout the match, came close to equalising before that when Papa Gueye fired a finish towards the bottom left corner, but Dutch goalkeeper Andries Noppert got his fingertips to it. It was a match that teased a goal for long periods but both sides lacked ruthlessness. Senegal, without injured key forward Sadio Mane during the competition, looked like a side missing their main attacking threat but can take confidence from the number of times they troubled the Dutch defence.

Saturday, 25 November 2022 - The African champions Senegal are up and running in Group A. Boulaye Dia broke the deadlock four minutes before half-time, slamming home to punish Boualem Khoukhi's miscued clearance. Looking to hit back in the second period, Qatar's hopes were dashed when former Bristol City striker Famara Diedhiou rose to flick in a glorious header just three minutes after the break. Watford's Ismaila Sarr had an early chance on his 50th cap but struck into the side-netting, while Idrissa Gueye of Everton's rasping drive went narrowly wide. Qatar felt they should have had a first-half penalty when Akram Afif was bundled over in the box by Sarr, but referee Antonio Lahoz pointed only for a goal-kick, much to the anger of the home supporters. Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy made stunning reflex saves to deny Almoez Ali and Ismail Mohamad, but he could do nothing about Mohammed Muntari's powerful header. Qatar were searching for the equaliser, but Bamba Dieng stroked in to deflate the home following and leave their team bottom of the group without a point after two games played.
Aliou Cisse says he may need to change tactics in their final Group A match against Ecuador to reach the World Cup knockout stage. Senegal must beat Ecuador on Tuesday to be certain of going through. "We have to think about the appropriate approach to the last match. We need to win to qualify for the last 16," Cisse said. "Our concentration must be better as we could have avoided the goal that we conceded, but the Ecuador match will be different."

Tuesday, 29 November 2022 - Ecuador 1 Senegal 2 -
Kalidou Koulibaly's nerveless volley sent Senegal into the World Cup's knockout stages for only the second time in their history as they eliminated Ecuador at a rowdy Khalifa International Stadium. All three goals came from players based in England as Ecuador's Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo cancelled out a penalty by Watford's Ismaila Sarr before Chelsea defender Koulibaly's side-footer won it. Ecuador needed just a point to progress but paid the price for a passive display as Senegal were spurred on by an almost non-stop cacophony of drumming from their supporters in Al Rayyan. Watford winger Sarr coolly stroked home from the spot, after being clumsily upended by Ecuador defender Piero Hincapie, to put the African champions deservedly ahead. Ecuador levelled with their first real chance as Caicedo swept home Felix Torres' flick-on but Koulibaly's composed finish immediately regained the lead for Senegal, who knew only victory would be enough to go through barring an unlikely Qatar upset against the Netherlands. They held out amid a nervy six minutes of stoppage time to finish as runners-up in Group A behind the Dutch, who clinched top spot by handing the tournament hosts a third defeat in three games with in Al Khor. Aliou Cisse's side are potential last-16 opponents for England given the Lions of Teranga will next face the winners of Group B - a berth Gareth Southgate's team could seal later on Tuesday.

Sunday, 4 December 2022
- Idrissa Gueya will be making his 100th appearance for the Senegalese side, becoming the country's first centurion, breaking the record currently held by Henri Camara (1999-2008).
