Diary
Wednesday, 20 May 2026 -
Spain midfielder Fermin Lopez has been ruled out of the World Cup with a broken bone in his foot.
The 23-year-old fractured the fifth metatarsal in his right foot during Barcelona's 3-1 La Liga win against Real Betis on Sunday.
The Spanish champions did not give a timeframe for his return.
Lopez announced on social media: "The operation went very well and I'm already looking forward to coming back stronger, both physically and mentally.
Life and football can be cruel when you least expect it or deserve it. But you have to accept that it's all part of the journey.
It's a very tough time for me and yet another challenge in my career that I will overcome - of that you can be sure.
Now it's time to support the national team and my team-mates from home."
Monday, 25 May 2026 - Injured forward Lamine Yamal has been named in Spain's World Cup squad, which does not feature any Real Madrid players for the first time.
The 18-year-old missed the final month of the season after tearing his left hamstring while playing for Barcelona on 22 April.
Real defenders Dean Huijsen and Dani Carvajal were left out.
"I don't look at one club or another. I don't have that local bias a fan might have. For me, it's more global. The only thing I want is for these footballers to feel proud of representing the national team."
said Spain coach Luis de la Fuente.
Real did not win a trophy this season and finished eight points behind La Liga champions Barcelona.
Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams, who has been struggling with a hamstring problem, also features in the 26-man squad.
"We're very relaxed. Barring any setbacks, we'll have everyone available from the very first match." Midfielder Mikel Merino, who returned in Arsenal's last Premier League game of the season on Sunday after four months out with a stress fracture in the foot, has been included in the squad.
He is one of seven Premier League players along with clubmates David Raya and Martin Zubimendi, Tottenham's Pedro Porro, Chelsea's Marc Cucurella, Manchester City's Rodri and Crystal Palace's Yeremy Pino.
Defenders Eric Garcia and Marc Pubill have been named after impressing this season for Barcelona and Atletico Madrid respectively.
"Excitement is the key word. Passion. The reaction of people all over Spain - adults and children alike - is that they are fully behind the national team."
Monday, 15 June 2026 - Spain 0 Cape Verde 0 - Debutants Cape Verde produced one of the biggest World Cup shocks of recent times by holding Spain to a goalless draw in Atlanta.
The third-smallest country in terms of population to qualify for a World Cup, Cape Verde were 67th in Fifa's latest rankings and many expected them to be swept aside by second-ranked Spain in their opening Group H contest.
However, the reigning European champions were laboured in attack for long spells and on the occasions Spain threatened the Cape Verde goal, 40-year-old goalkeeper Vozinha kept them at bay with numerous fine saves.
The introduction of Lamine Yamal as a second-half substitute injected life into his side and the Spain fans inside the stadium, but the Barcelona teenager - making his first appearance for almost eight weeks following his recovery from a hamstring injury - could not produce a decisive moment on his World Cup debut.
Ferran Torres wasted Spain's best chance in the first half, connecting with Marc Cucurella's header back across the six-yard box, but hitting the crossbar under pressure from Vozinha.
Mikel Oyarzabal, scorer of their Euro 2024 winner against England, was denied by a superb block from Shamrock Rovers' Roberto Lopes in the closing moments.
And as Spain pushed late on, they were almost caught out at the other end - but they avoided the ignominy of defeat as defender Diney Borges headed a corner straight at goalkeeper Unai Simon.
Sunday, 21 June 2026 - Spain 4 Saudi Arabia 0
- Lamine Yamal scored 10 minutes into his first World Cup start as Spain beat Saudi Arabia to register their first win of the tournament.
As expected, the 18-year-old was restored to manager Luis de la Fuente's starting line-up against Saudi Arabia – and he wasted little time in making his mark.
Mikel Oyarzabal's low cross from the left evaded Saudi Arabia defender Hassan Al Tambakti before being tapped in at the far post by Lamine Yamal, who became only the second player aged 18 or younger – after Pele in 1958 – to open the scoring in a World Cup match.
Reluctant to rest on their laurels, Spain continued to swarm forward and doubled their lead through Oyarzabal, who finished low past goalkeeper Mohammad Al-Owais after Saudi Arabia had failed to clear a corner.
The Real Sociedad forward scored his second just three minutes later, sweeping home Dani Olmo's flick-on at the far post to all but end the game as a contest.
Oyarzabal nearly completed his hat-trick with 10 minutes of the first half remaining, but he could only strike the crossbar after intercepting Al-Owais' stray pass.
Lamine Yamal and Oyarzabal were both taken off at the interval, but their withdrawals did little to disrupt Spain's rhythm as De la Fuente's team continued to pin Saudi Arabia back in the second half.
Al-Owais was equal to Marc Cucurella's powerful effort three minutes after the restart, only for the ball to rebound off Al Tambakti and into the back of the net to make it 4-0.
Spain took their foot off the gas a little after that, although half-time substitute Ferran Torres almost extended their advantage when he dragged a shot wide after being played through on goal.
Abdullah Al Hamdan registered Saudi Arabia's only effort on target with 10 minutes remaining, before Torres had a goal disallowed for offside - following a lengthy check by the video assistant referee - deep into stoppage time.
Saturday, 27 June 2026 - Uruguay 0 Spain 1
- Uruguay are out of the World Cup after another costly error by Fernando Muslera led to defeat by Spain.
European champions Spain were already practically guaranteed a place in the last 32 before kick-off, but Alex Baena's strike late in the first half meant they topped Group H and will face the runners-up of Group J.
Uruguay's miserable night was completed when midfielder Agustin Canobbio was sent off in stoppage time for a high challenge on Pau Cubarsi.
Spain took the lead in the 42nd minute after weathering a period of Uruguay pressure, when Baena swiveled and beat Muslera with a low shot despite the 40-year-old goalkeeper getting two hands on the ball.
Uruguay were unhappy that their opponents did not put the ball out of play in the build-up to the goal when Manuel Ugarte went down following what appeared an innocuous challenge. The Manchester United midfielder received treatment before leaving the pitch on a stretcher.
After making his third error leading to a goal in as many games, Muslera - who was making his 137th appearance - was replaced at half-time with Sergio Rochet.
The change made little difference as Spain took control of the second half but could not find a second goal.
Uruguay made a late push to save their tournament, but in truth never seriously tested Spain goalkeeper Unai Simon.
Former Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez, restored to the starting XI, missed two presentable opportunities in two minutes shortly after the first-half hydration break.
Bielsa's side were in the ascendency until Muslera's error, but it was not until the final 10 minutes that they began to test Simon.
Spain substitute Ferran Torres hit the crossbar late on, as Spain were able to see out their second win of the tournament, the first time they have achieved that at a World Cup since winning it 2010.
Yeremy Pino may miss the rest of the World Cup with a suspected broken collarbone.
Pino was injured during the closing stages having fallen awkwardly on his left shoulder following a challenge.
Despite appearing to be in considerable pain, the Crystal Palace player completed the match because Spain had already made all of their permitted substitutions.
Head coach Luis de la Fuente, who had brought on Pino in the 66th minute, admitted the initial diagnosis was worrying.
"It looks like Yeremy may have broken his collarbone. Tomorrow they are going to do some tests and we will see how far the injury is.
The man is suffering a lot and the effort he has made is tremendous, possibly with a broken collarbone to hold on until the end of the match... It has been heroic and I am very grateful, like all his team-mates."
A fractured collarbone would almost certainly rule Pino out for the remainder of the tournament, as the knockout stages begin.
In the meantime, Nico Williams has criticised Uruguay's Nicolas de la Cruz for a "completely unnecessary" tackle that injured the winger, who is expected to miss at least his nation's World Cup last-32 fixture.
Williams sustained a muscle injury following the challenge, calling it "one of the worst days of my life".
De la Cruz was booked for the tackle in added time.
Williams, 23, has had an injury-disrupted season with Athletic Club and only made brief appearances as a substitute in Spain's three group games.
"Today is one of the worst days of my life. I am injured again after a very difficult year. Yesterday, I suffered a new injury following an incident where a fellow professional acted out of frustration, unhappiness, and sadness over the situation he was going through."In my opinion, it was a play that could have been avoided, as it was completely unnecessary. But this won't stop me."
The Spanish Football Federation said Williams had suffered a "moderate" injury and still had a chance to return later in the tournament.
Thursday, 2 July 2026 - Spain 3 Austria 0
- Spain won a knockout match at the men's World Cup for the first time in 16 years as they cruised past Austria in Los Angeles to reach the last 16.
After 36 minutes of gradually increasing pressure, Spain finally took the lead when Marc Cucurella's low cross was swept home from 12 yards by Mikel Oyarzabal.
They deservedly doubled their lead in the 66th minute when patient build-up ended in right-back Pedro Porro charging into the box to head home Alex Baena's cross.
And a crushing victory was sealed as Cucurella and Oyarzabal combined again with a minute remaining. The new Real Madrid left-back played a perfect through-ball for the striker to slide home his fourth goal of the tournament.
Having been frustrated for the opening half an hour of the last-32 tie, Spain thought they had the lead when Cucurella smashed home a half-cleared corner - but it was disallowed as Pau Cubarsi was harshly judged to have fouled Austria keeper Alexander Schlager.
Schlager's heroics prevented Spain from being out of sight by half-time, denying Oyarzabal with a fine low save to his left, shortly before the European champions took the lead.
He then made a brilliant double save, tipping Baena's free-kick on to the crossbar before blocking Lamine Yamal's fierce follow-up with his chest.
However, Spain continued to dominate after the restart to run out comfortable winners.
Austria came close when substitute Sasa Kalajdzic headed over with his first touch.
But they rarely threatened further, meaning Spain join Mexico in not conceding a goal in their first four 2026 World Cup matches.
Monday, 6 July 2026 - Portugal 0 Spain 1
- Mikel Merino came off the bench to score an injury-time winner for Spain as they knocked Portugal out of the World Cup in a heavyweight last-16 tie in Dallas.
Spain had failed to create clear-cut openings in a poor second half before Ferran Torres played in the Arsenal midfielder, who slotted low past goalkeeper Diogo Costa in the 91st minute.
The 1-0 result was a repeat of their meeting at the same stage in 2010 and sets up a quarter-final tie with Belgium in Los Angeles.
Portugal's defeat also ends 41-year-old Ronaldo's World Cup career after the superstar confirmed this tournament would be his last.
Spain squandered a gilt-edged chance after just three minutes as Dani Olmo's pass helped Mikel Oyarzabal get behind the defence, but the Real Sociedad striker dragged his effort wide.
Costa then produced a double save to deny Spanish duo Lamine Yamal and Alex Baena in quick succession as La Roja probed for an opener, but it was Portugal who went closest next.
Spain were saved by the woodwork in the 41st minute as Nuno Mendes' venomous left-foot strike took a deflection off Pedro Porro and rattled the crossbar. However, the game remained goalless at the break.
Roberto Martinez's side continued to grow into the game after the break, though Ronaldo cut a frustrated figure up front in a second half that produced little in the way of action in the final third.
Bruno Fernandes hit the side-netting in the 76th minute, while at the other end Olmo's shot from inside the box was blocked by a brave Ruben Dias before the two Spain substitutes combined to produce the match-winning moment.
Friday, 10 July 2026 - Spain 2 Belgium 1
- Mikel Merino emerged as Spain's hero yet again as the substitute scored in the 88th minute to stun Belgium and book his side's place in the World Cup semi-finals.
The Arsenal midfielder stepped up with another late strike to decide a closely contested quarter-final tie in Los Angeles.
With the score tied at 1-1 and heading into extra time, Belgium substitute goalkeeper Senne Lammens - brought on to replace the injured Thibaut Courtois - spilled Pau Cubarsi's 25-yard strike and Merino capitalised by planting the rebound into the roof of the net from close range.
He had only been on the pitch for 117 seconds after replacing Dani Olmo.
Fabian Ruiz had given Spain a 30th-minute lead, before they conceded their first goal of the finals when Charles de Ketelaere headed home four minutes before half-time.
Victory sealed a last-four meeting for Luis de la Fuente's European champions against France in Dallas on Tuesday.
Spain took the lead with a fine move down the right as Pedro Porro exchanged passes with Lamine Yamal before delivering a cross that found Olmo, whose initial effort was stopped by Courtois.
But Paris St-Germain midfielder Fabian Ruiz, starting ahead of Pedri, drilled the rebound through the legs of Timothy Castagne to give the 2010 champions the lead their early dominance deserved.
Belgium drew level 11 minutes later as De Ketelaere stole in front of Cubarsi to power home Castagne's cross - ending Spain's remarkable run of 649 minutes without conceding at the 2026 World Cup.
Rudi Garcia's side wanted a penalty after the restart when Spain defender Aymeric Laporte headed a cross on to the arm of team-mate Rodri in the box, while Mikel Oyarzabal had a shot blocked by an alert Courtois.
But the Real Madrid keeper broke down in tears when he suffered what looked like a muscle injury and had to go off in the 71st minute.
It proved pivotal in the outcome as his replacement, Manchester United stopper Lammens, came on for his third international appearance and was at fault when he failed to hold Cubarsi's shot and Merino pounced from close range.
As Belgium's campaign ended in heartbreak, Spain face France in only their second World Cup semi-final.
Tuesday, 14 July 2026 - France 0 Spain 2
-
Spain are through to the World Cup final after surprising favourites France with a convincing semi-final victory at Dallas Stadium.
Luis de la Fuente's side blunted a France team brimming with attacking talent, controlled a game of few chances and will deservedly take their place in Sunday's showpiece thanks to goals from Mikel Oyarzabal and Pedro Porro.
Oyarzabal opened the scoring from the penalty spot midway through the first half after a lapse from France left-back Lucas Digne resulted in him giving forward Lamine Yamal an unceremonious wallop as he tried to clear the ball.
The spot-kick was confidently thumped into the corner by Oyarzabal and with a lead to defend, Spain's control of the match only grew.
After a below-par first-half, France were expected to come out fighting but it was an increasingly confident Spain who seized the upper hand once more as Porro played a lovely one-two with Dani Olmo before slotting in the second at the near post.
With a little more than half an hour to save themselves, France were again thwarted in their attempts to break down an incredibly disciplined Spain outfit, who have conceded just once all tournament.
Spain remained calm, composed and full of class to the end and, ultimately, saw the game out comfortably.
Spain will now travel to New Jersey, where they will await the winners of Wednesday's second semi-final between England and Argentina, as they bid to win the World Cup for just the second time.
