Club Career |
Club(s) |
Bailey grew up in South Africa after emigrating there in 1964, he began
his career with Wits University AFC of Johannesburg. He had a trial with
Manchester United FC where he subsequently signed a contract in January
1978. When he was training at Bisham Abbey on 21 April 1986, Bailey
injured his knee that left his World Cup Finals aspirations uncertain, the
knee operation to remove cartilage was deemed successful and indeed, he
was passed fit on 22 May and left for Mexico. After spending the
tournament as a squad member, on 26 June, it was announced that he would
need further surgery. His recovery was slow and precise and it was not
until December that he was considered for the reserves. He was due to
line-up for United in an European tie in January 1987, but another injury
(calf) prevented that. Bailey returned to Football League action on 21
February for five league matches. Until his injury surfaced again, so on
23 April 1987, Bailey announced his retirement at the age of 29 having
made 294 league appearances. Surgeons
removed a razor-sharp piece of his bone from his knee in late 1987. So on
19 January 1988, Bailey signed with the Kaizer Chiefs FC
until his knee began to flare up again at the end of the 1989 season. |

minutes are an approximation, due to the fact that many matches rarely stick to exactly ninety minutes long, allowing time for injuries and errors. |
