  John Ball
Birth 29 September 1900 in High Lane, Marple, Stockport, Cheshire [registered in Stockport, December 1900].
 

According to the 1901 census, the six month-old John was born in High Lane in Marple. He lives in Mellor View in Marple, Stockport, with his nine older siblings, and his parents, George and Phoebe Ann (née Steward). His Welsh father was a railway labourer.

 

According to the 1911 census.  The entire Ball family has disappeared. No members of the family can be found in 1911!!

 

According to the 1921 census, John is now a professional footballer (for Bristol Rovers FC) and is the second of four children, living with their widowed mother at 27 Doncaster Road in Whinney Hill.

Marriage to Annie Gertrude Clarke [registered in Rotherham June 1924]. Annie died in 1985.
  According to the 1939 register, John, an aero department inspector, is married to Annie G., living at 37 Lower Ford Street in Coventry.
Death December 1989, aged 89 years 63-93 days [registered in Coventry, Warwickshire, December 1989].

Playing Career

Club(s) Started his football career in the Silverwood Colliery FC team.  He signed on at Silverwood to work on Haulage in February 1921. Beginning with Silverwood Colliery, Ball went on to play for Sheffield United FC in 1919, Bristol Rovers FC in May 1921, Wath Athletic FC in 1922, Bury FC in May 1923 for £350 fee. He scored 92 league goals, before a move to West Ham United FC in May 1929, and Coventry City FC in May 1930.  In the 1930-31 season, he made fifteen appearances as a forward for Coventry City in which he scored nine goals. In September 1931, he was found at Stourbridge FC, before moving onto Hinckley United FC, Atherstone Town FC and Coventry Gas FC. He totalled 269 league appearances, scoring 108 goals.
