Club Career

Club(s) The Barnes family moved to England in January 1976. John started playing football with Stowes Boys Club in Paddington, but it was whilst playing with Sudbury Court FC of the Middlesex League that Barnes was noticed by Watford FC. After a short trial, he signed on 14 July 1981 and went on to play 233 league matches, scoring 65 goals. In the summer of 1987, Manchester United FC turned down the opportunity to buy Barnes, and it was Liverpool who bought him for £900,000 on 9 June 1987. On 13 August 1997, after 314 league appearances and 84 goals. Barnes left Liverpool for Kenny Dalglish's Newcastle United FC on a free transfer, and he played a further 27 league matches, scoring three goals. On 10 February 1999, after being isolated by the new Newcastle manager, Ruud Gullit, Barnes joined Charlton Athletic FC, again, on a free transfer. But as Charlton were relegated on the season's final day, despite his twelve league appearances, Barnes announced his retirement from playing. He played 586 league appaearnces, scoring 165 goals.

Management Career

Club(s) Joined The Celtic FC as head coach, with Kenny Dalglish his Director of Football, on 10 June 1999. It was an unsuccessful partnership, and Barnes was sacked on 10 February 2000, allowing Dalglish to complete the season.  Barnes did not re-enter management until, like his father, he became the national team manager of Jamaica on 16 September 2008. A successful period, where he remained unbeaten, that ended when Barnes took of manager's duties at Tranmere Rovers FC on 15 June 2009. He was sacked on 9 October 2009, having lost eight matches out of the twelve in charge.
