Began his career as a Manchester City FC trainee, signing professional
contract on 26 April 1985. He made three
league appearances, and made a further
twelve league appearances on loan at Chester City FC from 1 March
1986. Oldham Athletic FC signed Barrett on 24 November 1987 for a £35,000
transfer fee, he played 183 league matches,
scoring seven times.
Joined Aston Villa on 25 February 1992 for a club record fee received at £1.7
million. He spent two years at Villa Park,
making 119 league appearances, scoring just the once, before he
made the move to Everton FC for £1.7 million, on 30 January 1995. After
74 Premier League appearances, Barrett
spent a month on loan at Sheffield United FC
from 16 January 1998, making five league appearances, on
25 February 1998 he moved to Sheffield Wednesday FC on a free transfer,
but after only fifteen Premier League
appearances, Barrett succumbed to his injuries and he was released
in the summer of 2000. He retired shortly afterwards. |
