Club Career

Club(s) Having started with Wallsend Boys Club FC in his native Newcastle upon Tyne, he joined Carlisle United FC on 9 August 1979. He played 104 league matches, scoring 22 times. Beardlsey then joined the NASL when Vancouver Whitecaps on 1 April 1981 for £275,000, he was loaned to Manchester United FC on 9 September 1982 for £250,000, but rejoined the 'appearances on 1 February 1983, the fee apparently refunded, after United refused to retain him and played him only once in the League. Beardsley signed for Newcastle United for £150,000 on 23 September 1983. In the summer of 1985, he returned to Canada and played with North Shore Colts, including scoring twice against The Celtic FC. After 147 league matches and 61 goals, Beardsley signed for Liverpool FC on 23 July 1987 for a British record for a transfer fee, £1.9 million. He played 131 league matches scoring 46 times, before, on 5 August 1991, he crossed Stanley Park and joined Everton FC for £1 million and made another 81 league appearances, scoring 25 times. On 16 July 1993, Beardsley rejoined Newcastle United FC for £1.4 million and scored another 47 goals in 129 Premier League matches. Sold for a cutprice £450,000 to Bolton Wanderers FC on 20 August 1997, where he scored twice in seventeen Premier League matches. It was from there that he joined Manchester City FC on a month's loan on 17 February 1998, despite an attempt by Alex McLeish to take him to the Scottish Premier League with Hibernian FC. He made another six Premier League appearances. Joined Kevin Keegan's Fulham FC on a free transfer on 26 March 1998, making 21 league appearances, scoring four times, before being released to join Hartlepool United FC on 31 December 1998. He scored twice in 22 league appearances. He ended his career in Australia when he played twice for Melbourne Knights FC in 1999.

Beyond England

In 2000, Beardsley was tipped who became the manager of Scottish Premier League club, Heart of Midlothian FC. In June 2005, Beardsley was turned down for the Hartlepool United FC assistant manager job. On 26 June 2007, Beardsley was named an ambassador of the Football Foundation. Became the caretaker manager of Newcastle United FC on 27 September 2008 for a Premier League match against Liverpool FC. On 15 October 2011, Beardsley became United's Development of Football Officer
