NOT Walter Edward.... The only Walter Boyes born in Sheffield in January to March 1913 did not have a middle name. Again, the only 47 year-old Walter Boyes to die in 1960 did not have a middle name.
Born 5 January 1913 at 179 St. Philip's Road, Upperthorpe, Sheffield, West Riding of Yorkshire [registered as Walter in Sheffield, March 1913]. To Walter and Lucy (née Glaves)
Birthnotes Most, if not all, history books, state that Walter was born in Killamarsh, which is in Derbyshire. Although it is geographically close to Sheffield, it would fall under the Chesterfield registration district. His parents were living at the above address in the 1911 census, and all his brothers and sisters were born in Sheffield.

According to the 1939 register, Walter is a ship's painter, married to Hilda, and living at 97 Altway, in the Aintree area of Liverpool.

Club Career

Club(s) Started his career playing schoolboy football in Sheffield and played with Woodhouse Mills United FC in the Sheffield local league. Joined West Bromwich Albion FC on amateur forms in February 1931. He turned professional in March 1931 and went on to play 151 league matches, scoring 35 goals. Joined Everton FC on 25 February 1938 for £7000, scoring eleven goals in 66 league appearances. During the second World War, Boyes guested for, in alphabetical order, Aldershot FC, Brentford FC, Clapton Orient FC, Leeds United AFC, Manchester United FC, Middlesbrough FC, Millwall FC, Newcastle United FC, Preston North End FC and Sunderland AFC.  Joined Notts County FC in August 1949 as player-coach, only playing three league matches, scoring just the once. Scunthorpe United FC signed him as a part-timer on 7 August 1950 and he made a final thirteen league appearances, scoring twice. Joined Retford Town FC in 1953 as player-manager. Retired from playing 1958.

Beyond England

From 1952 until 1957, he was the sportsmaster at Oakwood Collegiate School in Sheffield. After he stopped playing with Retford Town FC, he took up the managerial position at Hyde United FC in April 1958. Joined Swansea Town FC as a trainer in 1959, he retired in June 1960 because of ill-health, an illness that ultimately took his life.
