his mother a cotton weaver. |
According to the 1939 register, John, a professional footballer, is
married to Bertha, and they are living at 106 Dill Hall Lane in Church. |

Club Career |
Club(s) |
Started his career playing schoolboy football with East Lancashire
and was also playing with Clayton Olympia FC. He was playing with
Manchester Central FC in 1928 and Manchester City FC in the 1929 close
season. Where he remained until his retirement during WW2,
completing 257 league appearances, scoring ten goals. During the
war period however, Bray did guest for a variety of clubs, including
Birmingham FC, Blackburn Rovers FC, Bolton Wanderers FC, Crewe Alexandra
FC, Nottingham Forest FC and Port Vale FC. On 19 February 1948, Bray did
sign on with a reformed Nelson FC of the Lancashire Combination, as a
player-coach, in an attempt to promote his new club into the Football
League. He was given the captaincy with complete control over the team. His
resignation was tended, and then accepted on 13 September 1948. |
