Full name John Bray
Born 22 April 1909 in Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire [registered in Blackburn, June 1909].

Census Notes

According to the 1911 census, the one-year old John is the only child to Joseph and Mary Ann, and living at 42 Simpson Street in Oswaldtwistle. His father is a coal miner hewer, his mother a cotton weaver.

According to the 1939 register, John, a professional footballer, is married to Bertha, and they are living at 106 Dill Hall Lane in Church.

Club Career

Club(s) Started his career playing schoolboy football with East Lancashire and was also playing with Clayton Olympia FC. He was playing with Manchester Central FC in 1928 and Manchester City FC in the 1929 close season. Where he remained until his retirement during WW2, completing 257 league appearances, scoring ten goals. During the war period however, Bray did guest for a variety of clubs, including Birmingham FC, Blackburn Rovers FC, Bolton Wanderers FC, Crewe Alexandra FC, Nottingham Forest FC and Port Vale FC. On 19 February 1948, Bray did sign on with a reformed Nelson FC of the Lancashire Combination, as a player-coach, in an attempt to promote his new club into the Football League. He was given the captaincy with complete control over the team. His resignation was tended, and then accepted on 13 September 1948.

Club(s) After he retired from playing, Bray became manager at Watford FC on 26 February 1947, he held the job until his resignation for 'family reasons' on 20 January 1948.
