According to the 1881 census, John is the second of three sons to William Blanthorn and Ruth (née Bird), living at 15 Eden Street in the Toxteth area of Liverpool. His father is a sailmaker.

 

According to the 1891 census, John, a tobacco maker's apprentice, is the second of seven children, now living at 1 Solway Street, still in Toxteth. His father is still a sailmaker.

 

According to the 1901 census, John, a professional footballer, is a visitor at the home of the Williamson's in 13 Muskham Street in The Meadows area of Nottingham.

Marriage to Emily Barlow on Wednesday, 31 May 1905 at All Hallows Church, Tottenham. John stated as being a professional footballer, living at 15 Foyle Road.

Children Jack and Emily Brearley have four sons together. John (b.1 November 1907), Arthur (b.18 May 1910), Leonard (b.23 December 1913) and Reginald (b.23 January 1920).
 

According to the 1911 census, John is now a licensed victualler, now married to Emily, and with two sons, John and Arthur, they live at 69 Mark Road in Wood Green, London.
His mother died in 1914.

 

According to the 1921 census, John is now a general labourer (for Metropolitan Tunnel & Public Work Company), still married, and now with two more sons, Leonard and Reginald.
His father died in February 1927.

 

According to the 1939 register, John is a patient in the Southend General Hospital on Prittlewell Chase, stated as being a heavy worker general labourer. His home is at 9 Marlborough Road in the town
Their son, Leonard, died shortly after, and then Reginald died in Flanders, 10 July 1941.
