Played
schoolboy football in Norwich and Norfolk before joining Chelsea FC as an
amateur in July 1956, and joining the Stamford Bridge groundstaff. He
turned professional in May 1958 and went on to play 178 league
matches, scoring eighty goals before he was transferred to
Birmingham City FC in May 1966 for £55,000, and he scored
36 goals in 83 league appearances. Queen's Park Rangers FC signed
Bridges in August 1968 for £50,000. 72 league appearances
followed, with a return of 31 goals. In September 1970, Millwall
FC signed him for a £40,000 transfer fee, and he returned
77 league appearances with 27 goals. In August 1972, Brighton &
Hove Albion FC signed Bridges for £28,000. He played in a
final 66 league matches and scored fourteen goals. After which he
spent time with South African club, Highland Park FC in 1974 and onto
Republic of Ireland, become the player-manager at St. Patrick's Athletic
FC in 1976 until 1978. |

After
ending his player career at St Patrick's Athletic FC in 1978, Bridges took
over as manager of Sligo Rovers FC. He returned to Norfolk and managed
Dereham Town FC, then King's Lynn FC in 1979-80 and then Horsford FC of
the Anglian Combination from June 1980. |

Beyond England |
When he returned to Norfolk from
Ireland, as well as sustaining his management career, he had a milk round
in his native Horsford. Barry ran a hotel on the Sussex coast before
taking over the running of his grandfather's farm. He sold both businesses
to buy a paper shop in West Earlham. Now semi-retired, living in Taverham
providing respite care for children with special needs. -
