Club Career

Club(s) Started playing schoolboy football in Dagenham before joining Neville United FC of the Dagenham League. West Ham United FC signed Brown in October 1951 and made 386 league appearances, scoring four goals. He joined Torquay United FC for a £4000 transfer fee in May 1967, making 42 league appearances, scoring once, and followed fellow player John Bond to Hereford United FC in May 1969 of the Southern League under John Charles, for a single season.

Management Career

Club(s) After retiring from playing, as John Bond became the manager, Brown became his assistant at Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic FC in June 1970. Became the assistant manager at Norwich City FC, again under Bond, in November 1973, but when Bond left for Manchester City FC, Brown became the club manager from October 1980 until his sacking on 9 November 1987. Was made caretaker manager of Shrewsbury Town FC in December 1987 for one match, and returned to manage Plymouth Argyle FC from July 1988 until his sacking in February 1990. After which he became a part-time scout for England under Terry Venables, Kevin Keegan and Glenn Hoddle.
