Birth 8 September 1900 in Monton, Eccles, Lancashire [registered in Barton upon Irwell, December 1900].
 

According to the 1901 census, six month old Norman was the youngest of five children to Robert James and Sarah Jane, living at 6 Mitchell Street in Eccles. His father is a salesman of grey cotton cloth.

 

According to the 1911 census, Norman now has a younger brother, living with their parents and his four older siblings at 474 Liverpool Street in Salford. His father sells drapery.

  According to the 1921 census, Norman, a chemical assistant, is the youngest of the five children still at home with their parents at78 Sedgley Avenue in Prestwich.
Marriage to Kathleen A. Wilson [registered in Salford, June 1926]
  According to the 1939 register, Norman, a football club secretary/manager, is married to Kathleen and living at 28 Cromwell Road in Chesterfield.
Death 22 October 1970 in Leicester, Leicestershire, aged 70 years 44 days [registered in Leicester, December 1970].

Playing Career

Club(s) Started his football career at Salford Schools. Played with Broughton St. John's FC and Sedgley Park FC, based in Prestwich. Joined Bury FC as an amateur in 1920, scored twice on his debut in December and turned professional in February 1921. He was constantly linked with other clubs, Burnley FC and Tottenham Hotspur FC at the end of 1923 to name but two. Remained with the club, becoming club captain and dropping back to centre-half, even becoming its manager on 15 August 1934, still playing on for another year, completing 506 league appearances, still a club record, after which, the Bury directors retired him from playing on 31 December 1935.

Management Career

Club(s) Took his first steps in management as player-manager of Bury FC on 15 August 1934. He gave up playing a year later. He left Gigg Lane, to take over as secretary-manager of Chesterfield FC on 21 June 1938. He was courted by his old club, and so returned to Bury FC as manager on 8 June 1945. His directors released him so he could become manager of Leicester City FC on 31 November 1949, he remained until his resignation on 9 February 1955. He resigned for 'personal and private reasons'.
