drapery. |

Playing Career |

Started his
football career at Salford Schools. Played with Broughton St. John's FC
and Sedgley Park FC, based in Prestwich. Joined Bury FC as an amateur in
1920, scored twice on his debut in December and turned professional in February 1921.
He was constantly linked with other clubs, Burnley FC and Tottenham
Hotspur FC at the end of 1923 to name but two. Remained with the club,
becoming club captain and dropping back to centre-half, even becoming its
manager on 15 August 1934, still playing on for another year,
completing 506 league appearances, still a club record, after which,
the Bury directors retired him from playing on 31 December 1935. |

Management
Career |
Club(s) |
Took his first
steps in management as player-manager of Bury FC on 15 August 1934. He gave up
playing a year later. He left Gigg Lane, to take over as secretary-manager of Chesterfield FC on
21
June 1938. He was courted by his old club, and so returned to Bury FC as manager
on 8 June 1945. His directors released him so he could become manager of
Leicester City FC on 31 November 1949, he remained until his resignation on 9 February 1955.
He resigned for 'personal and private reasons'. |
