After retiring from
playing in June 2006, Cooper joined the backroom staff at Middlesbrough
FC, becoming the Reserve Team Coach. After the departure of Steve McClaren
in December 2006, he stepped up to the position of First Team Coach, and
then after Malcolm Crosby left on 17 June 2009, Cooper became the
assistant manager to Gareth Southgate. On 22 October 2009, he became
Boro's caretaker manager after Southgate left. He held the position for
four days, until Gordon Strachan took over, who relieved him of all duties
the following May. On 9 March 2011, Cooper was appointed as Peter
Jackson's assistant at Bradford City FC. Jackson resigned on 25 August and
Cooper was made caretaker once more, until 8 September, when Phil
Parkinson was appointed. Cooper was released and he returned to
Middlesbrough FC to coach the under-18's. On 24 May 2013, Cooper was
appointed manager of Hartlepool United FC, but resigned on 4 October 2014
with the club bottom of the league. |

Beyond England |
Cooper is still in the football trade,
presently the assistant manager at Bradford City FC after various coaching
positions at Middlesbrough FC. Tragedy struck the Cooper family when their
son died in January 2002 in a tragic choking accident.
In response, the Cooper family set up the Finlay Cooper Fund in August
2006, a charity to help other children's charities. -
