Played for
Adlington FC when he was only fourteen years old. Chorley FC followed in
1927, before joining Blackburn Rovers FC as an
outside-right on 12 January 1928. After covering the opposite flank because of illness, he
made the outside-left berth his own, such was his success. Scored
47 goals in 129 league appearances, before he joined Aston
Villa FC, alongside Ronnie Dix on 2 May 1933 for a 'substantial' fee,
making 69 league appearances and scoring eleven goals. Then
Middlesbrough FC paid a £3000 transfer fee for him at midnight, 27 December 1935.
Following just 27 league appearances, in which he scored five times,
he was placed on the transfer list on 19 April 1937, he was
signed by Burnley FC on 26 April, but made just nine league
appearances. Signed for Hull City AFC a year later,
on 14 June 1938. He scored twenty goals in 42 league appearances.
Represented the Army during the war, who sold him to Rochdale FC on 31
October 1945, without a fee. His registration would return to Hull at the
commencement of the League programme, however, he remained at Rochdale the
following season. He hung up his boots, after 23 league
appearances and five goals, when he was appointed the club's
trainer in July 1947. |
