Born 5 February 1909 in Little Scotland, Blackrod, Lancashire [registered in Wigan, March 1909].

Birth notes

Initially thought to have been born in Blackpool, but this appears to have been an error. The 1911 census return confirms that Cunliffe was born in Blackrod.

Census Notes

According to the 1911 census, Arthur is the sixth of seven children to Nathan and Fanny, living at 30 Little Scotland in Blackrod. His father was a haulage hand at the colliery.

Died 28 August 1986 in Bournemouth, Dorset, aged 77 years x days [registered in Bournemouth, August 1986].
Height/Weight 5' 7½", 10st. 8lbs [1930], 5' 8", 11st. 0lbs [1938].

Club Career

Club(s) Played for Adlington FC and Chorley FC, before joining Blackburn Rovers FC as an outside-right. After covering the opposite flank because of illness, he made the outside-left berth his own, such was his success. Joined Aston Villa FC, alongside Ronnie Dix on 2 May 1933 for a 'substantial' fee. Then Middlesbrough FC paid £3000 for him at midnight, 27 December 1935 and after being placed on the transfer list on 19 April 1937, he was signed by Burnley FC on 26 April. Signed for Hull City AFC a year later, on 14 June 1938.
