Club Career
Club(s) Started playing with Lancashire Youth before signing for Bolton Wanderers FC as a centre-forward in July 1966.  After a season without any first team appearances, Dobson joined Burnley FC in August 1967 on a free transfer.  After 224 league appearances and 43 goals, Dobson broke the record transfer fee in August 1974 when he joined Everton FC for £300,000 (190 league appearances, 29 goals). He rejoined Burnley FC on 3 August 1979 for £100,000 (186 league appearances, twenty goals). Then joined Bury FC in March 1984 as player-manager (61 league appearances, four goals).

Club(s) Then joined Bury FC in March 1984 as player-manager, taking the managerial position from 1986 until 1989. Appointed manager of Bristol Rovers FC in July 1991, but was sacked by the October, after nine league defeats. Also took the reigns at Northwich Victoria FC for a while in 1991.
