"He
was last of star line
"MEMBER of Manchester United's first F.A. Cup winning team in 1909
and a famous footballer in his day, Mr. Dick Duckworth has died at
Chesterfield aged 76. Duckworth was the last member of one of the greatest
club half back lines in first-class soccer before World War I. His
colleagues were Charlie Roberts and Alec Bell. Mr. Duckworth, whose son,
Dick is the present manager of Stockport County, began his career with
United when their ground was at Clayton. He played behind Billy Meredith
in the 1909 Cup team that beat Bristol City at Crystal Palace and was also
in the United team that won the First Division championship in 1908 and
1911. He was till a member of the side when United moved to their present
ground at Old Trafford in 1911. The year before he played England against
South Africa. For many years fater his retirement Mr. Duckworth was a
licensee in Edenfield, near Bury. He moved to Chesterfield a few years
ago."
