Birth 22 December 1897 at 10 Bedford Street in Mill Hill, Blackburn, Lancashire [registered in Blackburn, March 1898].
Baptism 16 January 1898 in St Philip's Church, Blackburn. Living at 10 Bedford Street in Blackburn, son of John and Sarah Agnes. His father is a weaver. Baptism by I.F. French.
 

According to the 1901 census, John is the youngest of four children, all sons, to John and Sarah Agnes (née Walsh). They live at 10 Bedford Street in Blackburn, his parents are cotton weavers.

 

According to the 1911 census, John, still the youngest of four and still with their cotton weaving parents, is a tailor's shop assistant. They all live at 34 Suffolk Street in Blackburn.

 

According to the 1921 census, John is now aprofessional footballer (for Blackburn Rovers FC) and is visiting the home of the Pickles family at Pleasnt View in Ulnes Walton.

Marriage to Sarah Carter, on 15 July 1922 at St. James Church in Leyland [registered in Chorley, Lancashire, September 1922]. Three children, Constance (b.6 July 1933), John James (b.24 August 1925 d.24 August 1926) and Margaret S. (b.24 October 1937).
"Jack Hacking, Oldham Athletic's international goalkeeper, will be Conservative candidate in Thornham Ward at the Royton Urban District Council election on 26 March. Hacking says that the invitation reached him at home when he returned after Oldham Athletic's victory over Manchester United a fortnight ago. "My decision must not be taken as a sign that I am contemplating finishing with professional football," he said. "I feel good for football for a long time yet."   According to the 1939 register, John is the Accrington Stanley secretary-manager, married to Sarah and living at 135 Avenue Parade in Accrington, with three children.

Playing Career

Club(s) Began his career with Grimshaw Park Co-operative Society FC, whilst also assisting the Blackburn Rovers FC reserves. Blackpool FC signed Hacking in December 1919, where he kept goal for 32 league appearances. Joined non-league Fleetwood FC on 14 October 1925 before joining Oldham Athletic FC, alongside Billy Porter, in May 1926, he made 223 league appearances. Joined Manchester United FC on 14 March 1934, making 32 league appearances, up until he was injured in the new year. Joined Accrington Stanley FC as a player-manager on 27 May 1935, and he retired from playing in January the following year after seventeen league appearances in goal.

Management Career

Club(s) Joined Accrington Stanley FC as a player-manager on 27 May 1935, retired from playing in January the following year. He resigned his managership in early May 1949, effective at the end of the month, however, he was appointed the Barrow AFC secretary-manager on 17 May 1949, of the Football League Division Three North club, a position he held at the time of his untimely death in May 1955. However, Hacking had resigned his position with Barrow in January 1955, effective at the season's ending.
