Playing Career |

Began
his career playing junior football in Scotswood. He was also playing with
Newburn FC and Clare Vale FC, before joining North-eastern League side,
North Shields Athletic FC. From where he joined Newcastle United FC in
March 1910 for £100 transfer fee. He remained at St. James'
Park for nineteen years, becoming club captain for six years, and
making 472 league appearances, scoring 37 goals,
34 of them from the penalty spot. He was one of six players who
was placed on the United open-transfer list on 14 November 1928,
before moving to Stockport County FC on 18 January 1929, alongside
teammate Tom Curry. Returned to the north-east when Crook Town signed him
in December 1930. |
