Club(s) |
Played junior football with the Regent Street Congregationals in the
Barnsley District League. In three seasons, he scored 146 goals,
fourteen of them hat-tricks,
from where he had an unsuccessful trials with Barnsley FC and Sheffield
United FC, Chesterfield FC also played him for a couple of 'A' matches
during 1928-29. The Saltergate club then beat United to signed Hunt as a
centre-forward on 13 September 1929. After fourteen Third
Division North appearances and nine goals, as well 25 goals in 28 Midland
League appearances,
he then signed for Tottenham Hotspur FC on 6 June 1930 for a 'substantial
fee'. Hitting 124 goals in 185 league outings,
before being one of a few to join rivals, Arsenal FC, on 1 October 1937 for another
'substantial
fee', turning him into an inside-forward. However, within seven weeks,
Sunderland AFC made an attempt to sign Hunt, the deal was rejected.
However, after eighteen league appearances and three goals,
he joined Bolton Wanderers on transfer deadline day, 16 March 1938, for
about £5000, and made 45 league appearances, scoring 24 goals,
either side of the war, during which he aided Rochdale AFC in
1941. Shaw joined Sheffield Wednesday FC on 7 November 1946, and
after 32 league appearances, he scored eight goals,
before retiring in May 1948. |
