FC amateur, Maddren signed professional forms with in 1968 and played
293 league matches, scoring nineteen times, before playing his final
match in September 1977, a persistent knee injury that could not be
repaired ended his career in February 1979. |

Rejoined
Middlesbrough FC as a physiotherapist in 1982, being promoted to assistant
manager under Jack Charlton in March 1984. He was promoted to the
managers seat after Charlton left at the end of the 1983-84 season, and
guided Middlesbrough FC through its most traumatic years in its club's
history. He was sacked in February 1986. He then when onto coach Whitby
Town FC and Hartlepool United FC on a part-time basis. |

After being sacked, Maddren had a
chain of sports shops, Willie Maddren Sports, on which he concentrated. On
10 February 1995, Maddren was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease,
Maddren then campaigned and raised awareness about the disease, raising
