Club Career

Club(s) Played his early football with Chorley St. Gregory's FC and Chorley FC, before Plymouth Argyle FC signed him May 1973 for £5,000 and scored 56 goals in 135 league appearances. Ipswich Town FC then paid £130,000 plus two players for Mariner in October 1976.  After 96 goals in 260 league outings, Arsenal FC signed him in February 1984 for £150,000, where he scored fourteen goals in sixty league appearances.  Portsmouth FC from late 1986 until his retirement in May 1988. After a year out with Colchester United FC, Mariner returned to playing football with the Albany Capitals, of the ASL, and then the APSL, between 1989 and 1992. (Brief time with Maltese side Naxxar Lions in 1990-91). He left in 1992 for a brief period with San Francisco Bay Blackhawks.

Management Career

Club(s) After retiring from playing, Colchester United FC employed Mariner as their Commercial Manager from July 1988 for a year. Mariner left for the United States in 1989 to coach the Albany Capitals of the APSL, followed by a stint with the league's San Francisco Bay Blackhawks. Before joining the New England Revolution Revolution, Mariner was an assistant at Harvard University in 2003. Mariner has also served as Technical Director for the FC Greater Boston Bolts, one of the top youth soccer clubs in the U.S.. On 10 December 2009, he returned to England to become the head coach at his former club Plymouth Argyle FC, he left the post a year later. He then joined Toronto FC on 6 January 2011, first as a Player Development Officer, and then as their Head Coach.
