Played his
schoolboy football in Liverpool and for England before being signed by
Liverpool FC. He joined the groundstaff in 1953. He turned professional on
1 November 1954. He spent just over nine years at Anfield,
playing 269 league matches, scoring 76 times, before securing a
£55,000 move to Wolverhampton Wanderers FC in March 1964. Before the end
of the year, and 24 league appearances and four goals, in December, Melia joined Southampton FC for
a club record transfer fee £30,000. After 139 league
apearances and eleven goals, Aldershot FC signed Melia as a player-coach in November 1968, it cost them
£9,000. He stepped up to player-manager role from April 1969. After
134 league appearances and fourteen goals, he was
sacked in January 1972. He was signed by Crewe Alexandra FC as their
player-manager in May 1972 until December 1974. He retired from playing
after only four league appearances for The Alex. |

Melia
became the manager at Southport FC in July 1975 until September that year.
Later in 1975, he was coaching in the Middle East and then scouted for the
Southern California Lasers in the NSL in 1978. A year later, he was head
coach of Cleveland Cobras. He was scouting for Brighton & Hove Albion
FC, before serving as their manager from March to October 1963. He left to
manage CF Os Belenense in Portugal before returning to manage Stockport County FC
from July to November 1986. |
