Playing Career |
Club(s) |
Played schoolboy
football in Preston as an outside-left, before joining Upper Walton FC of
the Preston & District League in 1919. Climbed the league's when he joined
Cuppull Central FC in the West Lancashire League. He signed amateur
forms with Preston North End FC towards the end of the 1921-22 season. He
was also playing for Great Harwood FC and Leyland FC before signing for
Sunderland AFC in May 1923. After 215 league
appearances, he joined rivals, Newcastle United FC on 3 October 1929
for a £2750 fee, playing 143 league matches.
Aftr being placed on the free transfer list, he rejoined Sunderland AFC on
25 June 1934 for a season
without playing any league matches, before joining Leeds United AFC
on 2 May 1935, playing 67 league matches.
He returned to the North-East when Gateshead FC signed him on 23 June 1937
for another 71 league matches. He retired
during the outbreak of war. But he did play for Stockton FC during the
wartime. |
