Club Career

Club(s) Pickering played junior football in Blackburn, from where he joined his local league club, Blackburn Rovers FC as an amateur. He turned professional on 19 January 1958 as a full-back, but still managed 123 league appearances, and after moving up front, scored 59 goals. Everton FC broke the transfer record when they spent £82,000 for his signature in March 1964, he returned 97 league appearances with 56 goals. In August 1967, Birmingham City FC then splashed out £50,000 for him, and he made another 74 league appearances and scored another 27 goals. Blackpool FC then signed Pickering in June 1969 for £45,000, scoring 24 in 49 league appearances. In March 1971, Pickering returned home when Blackburn Rovers FC signed him for a £10,000 transfer fee. He only scored twice in his eleven league appearances. His career ended with a two month trial at Brighton & Hove Albion FC in February 1972.
