Played schoolboy football representing East Northumberland. Joined
Blyth Spartans FC when he was only fifteen years old. Newcastle United FC
signed Richardson for a £200 transfer fee in April 1928. After 136
league appearances and 42 goals, he was transferred to
Huddersfield Town on 4 October 1934 for a £4000 transfer fee,
made 120 league appearances, scoring 32 goals,
before returning to Newcastle United FC on 19 October
1937, for a £4500 fee. Before the end of the season, on the 14 March 1938
transfer deadline, having made just fourteen league
appearances, scoring four goals,
Richardson joined Millwall FC for another £4000
transfer fee. He made 55 league appearances and scored another
nineteen goals. Joined Leyton Orient FC as a player-coach in
January 1948, and made just fifteen league appearances. |

It was
Richardson's cross that caused controversy in the 1932 FA Cup Final. He
hooked the ball across after it had clearly crossed the goal-line. The
cross was then scored by Allen, the equalising goal. United going on to

early playing days. After
hanging up his boots, Richardson served as an assistant trainer with
Leyton Orient FC, becoming a trainer between June 1951 and June 1955.
Became the assistant trainer at Millwall FC from November 1956 for a hsort
time, before being compelled to retire on health grounds. -
