Club Career |
Club(s) |
Played schoolboy football with Lancashire
Schools. Then junior football with Barrow Wireworks FC, before joining
Barrow AFC as a professional in Christmas 1925. He made eighteen
Divison Three North appearances, and scored five goals,
Chesterfield AFC signed Roberts at the end of that season on 1 July 1926.
Another seventeen Division Three North appearances and another
three goals before Lincoln City FC signed Roberts on 11 August
1928. Another 33 North appearances and 23 goals followed.
After proving unpopular with the Imps' supporters, on 20 June 1930, Port
Vale FC signed him for a 'paltry' £100 transfer fee and he repaid
with nine goals in 24 Divsion Two appearances. Millwall FC then
signed Roberts on 30 April 1931, six days after Roberts scored the only
goal in a league match between the two clubs. He remained until July 1935,
having played 115 league appearances, majority (98) in the Second Division
and 25 goals. He had been placed on the transfer list, and when
the League Managaement Committee met on 28 June 1935, they decided that
the 'fee asked for' was to be reduced. Sheffield Wednesday FC signed
Roberts on 1 October 1935, and played for them in the Central League.
Peterborough United FC signed him in the November, and he made 84
Midland League appearances, and scored 27 goals. Afterwhich he
played for Spalding United FC in the United Counties League, who had
signed him on 17 August 1938. |
