Alfred and Eliza (née Blackborow), living at 60 Doncaster Road. His father is a builders
labourer. |

According to the 1911
census, James now has three younger siblings, and is the second of five
children now at home with their parents. He is in fact, one of nine, but
four of his siblings have died. His father is now a greengrocer, and they
all live at 303 Church Road in the Manor Park area of East Ham. |
Marriage |
to Ellen Harriet
Murphy, on 11 September 1920, at St Mary The Virgin, Little Ilford
[registered in West Ham, September 1920]. They had two
children, James Alfred (b.19 March 1922) and Marjorie Kathleen (b.27 July
1923). |

Playing Career |
Club(s) |
Began
his playing career after he left Yorkshire for London, starting with
Fulwell FC and then Chadwell Heath United FC. Also played with Manor Park
Albion FC and Wall End United FC, a club based in East Ham. West Ham
United FC signed Ruffell in March 1920. He made
505 league appearances and scored 159 goals, before the Hammers
released him on a free transfer on 22 April 1938. Aldershot FC signed him
in June. He retired the following season because of injury,
having played just twice, scoring once. |
