Began as a Liverpool
FC trainee, before signing professionally on 8 November 1994.
After just one league appearance as a three minute substitute, Thompson
was loaned out to Swindon Town FC in November 1997, until January 1998,
making ten league appearances. He returned to Anfield to
complete 48 Premier League appearances, where he also scored five goals. Signed for Coventry City FC for 2.5
milion pounds in the summer of 2000, and after he was sent-off on his
debut, he completed 66 league appearances and scored fifteen goals. In August
2002, signed for Blackburn Rovers FC for 1.5 million pounds, and as he
stuttered to make 64 league appearances, and scoring five goals,
injuries were taking effect. He was released from
his contract, and he signed for Wigan Athletic FC on 19 January
2006, scoring twice in ten league appearances, and was released at the end of that season. Portsmouth
FC signed him on 28 July 2006, but made just twelve league appearances before joining Bolton Wanderers FC on
31 January 2007; He was released from his contract again in May
2007, having played just eight league matches. Following a trial with Sheffield United FC in November 2007,
Thompson announced his retirement from playing football on 28 November
2007, due to cartilage injury problems; |
