Background |
Portugal were announced as hosts for UEFA Euro 2004 on 12 October
1999, in Aachen, Germany, beating Spain and the joint bid of Austria and
Hungary.
Spain had launched its bid on 8 November 1996, and
Austria/Hungary seven months later. |

The Draw |
The 16 teams qualifying for
the 2004 European Championship finals competition were divided into
four groups of four teams each for the first round of the final
tournament by
draw held on 30 November 2003, at the Pavilhao Atlantico, Lisboa,
Portugal. Pursuant
to the competition's regulations, UEFA seeded four teams as the
heads of the four groups: Portugal as the host
nation, France as the reigning European champion and as the
highest ranked team alongside Sweden and the Czech Republic, in UEFA's
November 2003 European national team ranking table, which
assigned each team a coefficient calculated on the basis of results achieved in the qualifying competitions for the
2002 World Cup
and the 2004 European Championship (excluding the playoff
matches).
