Party details correct up to
and including West Germany's match against Netherlands on 14 March 1956.
Sunday, 20 May 1956 -
All five forwards of West Germany's victorious 1954
World Cup Final are among the eighteen players chosen to prepare for Saturday's
match. They are Friedrich and Ottmar Walter, Hans Schäfer, Max Morlock and Helmut
Rahn. Other forwards are Erwin Waldner, Pfaeff and Schroeder. None of these
eight forwards played in the last time these countries met in December 1954.
Werner Liebrich, stalwart centre-half of the Final team, who was also at
Wembley, is among five half-backs chosen. They include Robert Chlienz, the
one-armed player from Stuttgart. Friedrich Herkenrath, who played in that 1954
match, is one of two goalkeepers chosen. Heinz Wewers gets another chance, after
last playing for the West German side in 1951. The Germans are all part-timers
on a fixed rate of £25 per month. They will get neither fee nor bonus for
playing against England.
Thursday, 24 May 1956
- It was ladies' day at the German camp this
afternoon. The players had a party under the trees in the grounds of their
training centre by Lake Wannsee. World Cup winning captain, Friedrich Walter, will lead
the German side out against England at Berlin's Olympic Stadium on Saturday.
Goalkeeper Friedrich Herkenrath is the only member of this team that played England
in December 1954. Surprise omissions from the team are centre half Werner Liebrich, who
played such a storming game against Wembley eighteen months ago, and the fast,
tricky, wingers, Helmut Rahn and Hans Schäfer. Schäfer is apparently unavailable for
selection, whereas Liebrich (thigh) and Rahn have doubts over their fitness, having been
injured.
