Diary

Sunday, 20 May 2001 - Sven-Göran Eriksson has named a 24-man squad for the friendly match against Mexico and the World Cup 2002 preliminary match against Greece. There were several changes from the last squad. Eriksson gave recalls to four players:  Martin Keown, Ray Parlour, Alan Smith, who is uncapped, and Gareth Southgate. Six players were omitted.  Four of them were unavailable for selection because of injury: Sol Campbell, Frank Lampard, Gary Neville and Richard Wright.  Andrew Cole is suspended for the World Cup qualifier against Greece because he picked up his second caution of the preliminary competition against Albania, and since the Mexico friendly is a warmup for the Greece qualifier, Eriksson did not select him.  Gavin McCann was dropped.

Monday, 21 May 2001 - Eriksson has stated that, with his consent. Steve McManaman will not be available for the match against Mexico because his club side, Real Madrid, have an important end-of-season match against Alaves the next day.  McManaman will join the squad the following week at their training camp in La Manga.

Tuesday, 22 May 2001 - Uncapped Leeds United defender Danny Mills was given a late call to join the squad because Manchester United defender Wes Brown has an Achilles tendon problem and is unable to take part in training today at Derby County's Pride Park.  The England coaching staff gave Brown 24 hours to prove his fitness.  Mills figured briefly in the England squad in June 1999 when Kevin Keegan gave him a call for the European Championship match in Bulgaria.  Mills, then with Charlton Athletic, did not play on that occasion and has not been recalled since.  If Brown is forced to withdraw, the England squad will be reduced to two recognized right backs in Manchester United's Phil Neville and Liverpool's Jamie Carragher.  After an excellent season with Leeds, Mills was an obvious choice as cover for Brown.

Wednesday, 23 May 2001 - England assistant coach Peter Taylor has said that Wes Brown's achilles tendon injury has forced his withdrawal from the squad for the Mexico match only.  He is undergoing treatment, Taylor said, and may yet be available for the World Cup 2002 qualification match against Greece.

Thursday, 24 May 2001 - Ray Parlour will be unavailable for the Mexico match because of an injured thumb.  He went for x-rays yesterday after training and ended up having minor surgery.

Friday, 25 May 2001 - The squad emerged unscathed from the 4-0 trouncing of Mexico in tonight's friendly match at Pride Park in Derby, although 21 of the 22 available players were given playing time.  At a post-match press conference, Eriksson said he would take all the squad members to the training camp in La Manga, Spain to prepare for the World Cup 2002 preliminary match against Greece on Saturday, 6 June, although Wes Brown, who missed the Mexico match because of an Achilles tendon injury, would have to pass a fitness test before he would be allowed to rejoin the squad.   Ray Parlour, who also missed the Mexico match because of a minor thumb injury, and Danny Mills, who was given a late call to the squad on Brown's withdrawal from the Mexico match, will be among those taking part in the week-long training camp.  Steve McManaman, given permission to miss the Mexico match because his club side, Real Madrid, had an important end-of-season Spanish league fixture, will join the squad after it reaches La Manga.

Monday, 28 May 2001 - Wes Brown failed a fitness test administered by England physiotherapist Alan Smith at Manchester United's Carrington training ground and withdrew from the England squad.

Tuesday, 29 May 2001 - All but one of the 24 remaining England squad members embarked for La Manga, where they were joined by the 24th player, Steve McManaman, who reported directly from his home in Madrid.

Thursday, 1 June 2001 - Eriksson announced that Joe Cole and Michael Carrick, who both made their senior side debuts against Mexico, would be transferred to the under-21 squad the next day in the expectation they will play against the Greece under-21 side on Tuesday.  The under-21 squad had been depleted by several injuries.  Eriksson added that Cole and Carrick would remain part of the senior squad after the Greece match.

Monday, 5 June 2001 - The squad wound up their week-long training session in La Manga and flew to Athens two days ahead of their World Cup qualifier against Greece.  The squad that arrived in La Manga remains intact apart from Cole and Carrick.  Fitness tests put to rest minor injury concerns about David Seaman, Paul Scholes and David Beckham.  Although Steven Gerrard has been rested during some training sessions, he is expected to be fit to play against Greece.
