season, against Nigeria on 12 June 2002.
Diary
Thursday, 9 May 2002
-
Sven-Gran
Eriksson's picks a provisional 23-man squad for the World Cup Finals in South
Korea/Japan. It includes the injured David Beckham.
Saturday, 11
May 2002 -
An groin injury to Steven Gerrard see's him limp off in
the final Premiership match of the season means Gerrard's place in the
squad is in doubt, his place will probably go to reserve and clubmate,
Danny Murphy. Kieron Dyer also receives a knee injury in Newcastle
United's final match against Southampton.
Monday, 13
May 2002 -
The England squad fly from Luton to Dubai for a few days
relaxation with their families, before they jet off to the Far East.
Danny Murphy and Trevor Sinclair travel as potential replacements for
the injured Steven Gerrard and Kieron Dyer, both of whom stayed at
home, Gerrard to have a scan. David Beckham assured reporters that he
would be fit for the first game after recovering from a broken foot,
but that he would not take part in either of the warm-up games, as a
precaution.
Tuesday, 14
May 2002 -
Steven Gerrard officially withdraws from the squad in
order to have treatment on his troublesome groin. The 21-year-old
midfielder needs an operation, as yesterday's scan revealed. He will
require more than a month to recover. As expected, Danny Murphy was
drafted into the provisional final 23.
Wednesday, 15
May 2002 -
There is light training in Dubai for the squad. David
Beckham, who is trying to regain match fitness, and Nicky Butt, he is
recovering from a knee injury, are involved as they do some jogging.
Friday, 17
May 2002 -
Kieron Dyer flys to Dubai to join the rest of the squad
in time to join their nine-hour flight to Korea. He will be assessed
on Monday, before Eriksson submits his final 23-man squad to FIFA on
Tuesday. Trevor Sinclair will travel to Korea too, incase Dyer does
not make a sufficient recovery.
Tuesday, 21 May 2002 - England draw 1-1 with the Korea Republic.
Wednesday, 22 May 2002 - A
foot injury to Danny Murphy towards the end of a training session means he
will miss the World Cup. He becomes the third member of the squad to break his
foot, following Gary Neville and David Beckham. Murphy has broken the
second toe of his left foot. Trevor Sinclair, originally placed on stand-by
because of fears for Kieron Dyer's injury, is called up to replace Danny
Murphy. Under-21 captain David Dunn and Alan Smith are placed on stand-by should they be
required.
Sunday, 26 May 2002
- Trevor Sinclair arrives in Japan in time to take part in Englands
draw with Cameroon. Robbie Fowler's last minute equaliser did ask more
questions than it answered. But Eriksson will be relieved that there
were no injuries suffered.
Tuesday, 28 May 2002
- David Beckham resumes full training in preperation for the opening
match with Sweden on Sunday.
Sunday, 2 June 2002 - England began
their World Cup campaign with an unconvincing draw against a Sweden
team who dominated the second half and could easily have snatched
victory.
Friday, 7 June 2002
- England recorded a famous win over old foes Argentina to take a
giant step towards World Cup qualification from Group F. Owen
Hargreaves suffered with an injury of his shin in the first twenty
minutes, he will likely be unavailable for the final group match
against Nigeria.
Tuesday, 12 June 2002
- England laboured to an uninspiring goalless draw against Nigeria at
Osaka - yet it proved enough to put Eriksson's men into the last
sixteen. The highlight of the afternoon happened elsewhere when Sweden
knocked out fierce rivals Argentina. England will now face Denmark in
Saturday's match after they finished second in Group F. Sweden will
face Senegal.
