Squad details correct up to
and including Brazil's match against Belgium on 17 June 2002.
Diary
Monday, 6 May 2002 - There is
no last-minute reprieve for Romario in Luiz Felipe Scolari's World
Cup squad. There is also no room for Djalminha, who appears to have been left
out after head-butting the Deportivo La Coruña coach, Javier Irureta, in
training last week. The forwards were left out in favour of Vampeta and Kaka.
Saturday, 18 May 2002 - Ronaldinho hit two brilliant first half goals
to help Brazil to victory over Catalonia in an exhibition match at Barcelona's
Camp Nou. Edmilson netted a third, in response to a single goal from a
Catalonian team made up of players from teams from north east Spain.
Monday, 20 May 2002 - Rivaldo says he is fit and raring to go after
the squad arrived in Malaysia to continue their World Cup preparations. The
former world player of the year has been struggling with a knee injury.
Saturday, 25 May 2002 - Ronaldo scored his first international goal
for three years as Brazil hammered Malaysia in their final match before the
World Cup. The Inter Milan striker also set up the second goal for Juninho, who
scored a minute after coming on as substitute. Denilson, with an individual
goal, and Edilson completed the rout.
Monday, 3
June 2002 - A controversial late penalty by Rivaldo handed Brazil a 2-1
victory over a Turkey side that saw two men sent off in a gripping opening game
in Group C. Aston Villa's Alpay was sent off in the 85th minute after hauling
down Luizao, although the offence took place outside the penalty area. Hakan
Unsal received a second yellow card for kicking the ball at Rivaldo at a
corner-kick - although the Brazilian over-dramatic reaction, claiming in struck
his face, contributed to the Turk's downfall.
Thursday, 6 June 2002 - Rivaldo has been fined $7,350 (5,180) for
feigning injury during their last match against Turkey.
FIFA announced the sanction after the Barcelona star had been widely criticesed
for his actions in a clash with Hakan Unsal. A disciplinary committee examined
videoo evidence of the incident and found Rivaldo guilty of 'simulation', but
decided not to suspend him.
Saturday,
8 June 2002 - The awesome power of
Roberto Carlos opened up the floodgates for Brazil to swamp China in Seogwipo.
The Real Madrid full-back stifled China's confident start by firing Brazil ahead
with a trademark free-kick of frightening power. It was a hammer blow from which
China never recovered aas Brazil ran riot to all but seal their berth in the
last sixteen with further goals from Rivaldo, Ronaldo and a Ronaldinho penalty.
Thursday,
13 June 2002 - Brazil strolled into
the second round with an impressive win as Costa Rica crashed out of the
competition in Suwon. Brazil never really had to
employ top gear and goals from Ronaldo, Edmilson, Rivaldo, Junior and a Luis
Marin own goal set up a meeting with the runners-up from Group H.
Monday,
17 June 2002 - Second
half goals from Rivaldo and Ronaldo set up Brazil for a World Cup quarter-final
against England with a narrow victory over a battling Belgium side.
