Squad details correct up to
and including FYR Macedonia's match against Turkey on 12 October 2003.
Diary
Tuesday, 17 September 2002 -
FYR Macedonia coach Nikola Ilievski has
announced a 25-man squad for the upcoming European championship
qualifiers against Turkey and England on 12 and 16 October.
After a disappointing 1-1 draw against Liechtenstein in the
side's opening qualifier, Ilievski has left four players out of the squad -
Goran
Pandev, Ace Stojkov, Igor Nikolovski and Mile Krstev.
Sunday, 6 October 2002 -
Nikola Ilievski has named a much-changed squad of 22 for the European
championship qualifiers against Turkey and England following a number of
withdrawals due to injury. Angel Panov broke his nose in a recent league
game, while fellow forwards Gorgji Hristov and Ilce Naumovski are rated
doubtful. Other absentees include goalkeeper Gogo Jovcev, Toni Meglenski, Pance
Cumbev and Danco Masev. Ilievski has recalled NK Rijeka's Miroslav Vajs
and Goran Pandev who both missed the Liechtenstein match while FK Partizan's
Milan Stojanovski and Beograd's Filip Despotovski are also added to the squad.
However, Ilievski has resisted turning to Brazilian-born Aguinaldo Braga who has
failed to make an impact at Greek side FC Aris Thessaloniki.
Monday, 7 October 2002 -
Macedonia will be without key striker Gorgji Hristov when they take on
England in their European championship qualifier on 16 October. Coach Nikola
Ilievski said the Nijmegen player had not recovered completely from a recent
injury. Hristov, who had a spell in English football with Barnsley, will only
play in the first of their back-to-back qualifiers against Turkey at home on
Saturday. "Nijmegen's doctor asked me to drop out Hristov from the tie with
England," the coach said.
Monday, 14 October 2002 -
Macedonia's
preparations for their first ever fixture against England descended into
chaos yesterday when their coach Nikola Ilievski announced that he was on
the verge of resigning and accused the head of the the national football
association, Lambe Arnauv, of being "unfit to run a village team".
In a remarkable 45-minute rant Ilievski claimed that he had not
been paid since taking the job in March and that the players were in
"mutinous mood" because they too were owed money. "I haven't
received a single penny in six months and I will not tolerate it. If this
carries on I will walk away and never look back.
The only reason I have not quit already is that people will say I am
afraid of England. This is not an idle threat. I could be manager of any
team in the world. If I was coaching England we would win the European
Championship, no problem. But our president does not deserve a place in
football."
Tuesday, 15 October 2002 -
Nikola Ilievski received a welcome boost ahead of the match with
England at St Mary's when striker Gorgji Hristov joined the squad for final
preparations. Hristov had intensive treatment with his Dutch club NEC
Nijmegen before he was allowed to fly to England for the qualifier. Ilievski
said: "Hristov is one of our most experienced players and he is important to us
but how fit he is I do not know."
Wednesday, 15 October 2002 -
Although Georgi Hristov joined his Macedonian
team-mates in Southampton yesterday ahead, the
former Barnsley striker will not play any part in the match.
