Diary
Tuesday, 4 May 2021 -
Teams will be allowed to
select a 26-player squad instead of 23 at this summer's delayed European
Championship Finals. The change has been implemented to lessen the load on
players after a club season compressed because of the coronavirus
pandemic. It will also help managers adapt if outbreaks occur during the
tournament.
Monday, 7 June 2021 -
A new kit for Ukraine's football team, showing a map including the
Russian-annexed Crimea, has provoked anger in Moscow. Ukraine unveiled its
shirt for Euro 2020, emblazoned with its borders including Crimea and the
slogan 'Glory to Ukraine!' Russia annexed the Crimean peninsula from
Ukraine in 2014, and considers it a part of its territory, something
rejected internationally.
Thursday, 10 June 2021 -
Ukraine has been told to remove a political slogan from its Euro 2020
jersey by UEFA after Russia protested. UEFA say that the combination of
the map and the wording inside the shirt clearly has 'historical and
militaristic significance.'
Sunday, 13 June 2021 -
Netherlands 3 Ukraine 2 -
Denzel Dumfries headed a dramatic late winner to earn Netherlands victory
after Ukraine had come back from 2-0 down in a Group C thriller im
Amsterdam. Ukraine pulled their first one back through Andriy
Yarmelenko's outstanding 25-yard dipping finish and, four minutes later,
Roman Yaremchuk headed the equaliser to silence the Dutch fans. However,
Dumfries' excellent 85th minute header, after substitute Nathan Ake's
cross, earned the Netherlands victory.
Thursday, 17 June
2021 - Ukraine 2 North Macedonia 1 -
Ukraine bounced back from the opening Euro 2020 defeat as they held on to
beat the tournament debutants North Macedonia in an entertaining encounter
in Bucharest. Shevchenko's side ended a run of six successive European
Championship defeats to remain in contention of progression from Group C.
Captain Andriy Yarmolenko capitalised on poor defending from a 28th minute
corner, before his pass set up Roman Yaremchuk, who slotted neatly into
the bottom corner five minutes later.
Monday, 21 June 2021 -
Ukraine 0 Austria 1 -
Austria reached the knockout stages for the first time as a deserved win
over Ukraine secured a last-16 tie against Italy. Christoph Baumgartner's
close-range finish proved enough to earn a Wembley meeting with Italy on
Saturday. Ukraine struggled to find any fluidity in their play, with their
only threatening effort arriving when Mykola Shaparenko forced a routine
diving save from Daniel Bachmann in the first half. Ukraine finished third
in Group C and qualify for the next phase for their first time, but will
have to wait until Wednesday before they find out who their opponents are.
Wednesday, 23 June 2021 -
Viktor Claessons' stoppage-time winner for Sweden over Poland takes them
to top spot in Group E, setting up a round-of-sixteen fixture against
Ukraine.
Tuesday, 29 June 2021 - Sweden 1 Ukraine 2 -
Artem Dovbyk scored in added time in extra-time as Ukraine edged out
10-man Sweden at Hampden Park to set up a Euro 2020 quarter-final with
England. Oleksandr Zinchenko smashed Ukraine in front with a powerful
drive but a deflected shot from Emil Forsberg levelled matters before
half-time. Sweden lost Marcus Danielson to a red card in extra time after
a VAR check after a studs-up challenge on Artem Besedin's leg. With a
penalty shoot-out looming, Dovbyk - one of twelve substitutes used - headed
a dramatic winner from close range. The match in Glasgow was an even
contest throughout, with both sides out on their feet by the final
whistle.
Wednesday, 30 June 2021 -
Artem Besedin is out of the tournament with a knee injury following the
tackle by Sweden's Marcus Danielson. Besedin is returning to Ukraine for
tests. His club, Dynamo Kyiv said that an MRI has shown a partial tear to
his posterior cruciate ligament as well as damage to lateral ligaments and
a fracture to part of his femur. He will be out of the game for up to six
months.
