Diary
Wednesday, 9 November 2022, 7.00pm -
Rob Page has tonight named a squad of 26 players for the World Cup Finals in
Qatar. The squad
features nine current Premier League players and eight from the Championship.
There are two League One players, two from League Two, one from Scottish
Premiership plus four who are currently playing their club football overseas -
captain Gareth Bale, Aaron Ramsey, Joe Rodon and Ethan Ampadu. Joe
Allen, a long-term injury doubt, has been deemed fit enough for inclusion, while
Cardiff City’s Rubin Colwill, who has also only just returned from a month on
the sidelines, is also selected. Defender Tom Lockyer is back in the
international fold after a year looking on, picked as cover for the ruled out
Rhys Norrington-Davies.

-
Teenage midfielders Luke
Harris and Jordan James will travel to the World Cup as back-up players for
Wales. Both players
earned first call-ups in September but neither has made a senior
appearance for Wales. They will not be
able to play in the World Cup unless other players withdraw before the
opening match against the United States on 21 November. Instead, manager
Robert Page is taking James and Jersey-born Harris with the squad to Qatar
in order for them to gain experience of being in a major tournament
environment.
Tuesday evening, 15
November 2022 - The Welsh party leave the Vale of Glamorgan hotel for a
training session at Cardiff City Stadium, before leaving for Cardiff airport
bound for Qatar.
Wednesday, 16 November 2022 -
Wales arrived in Qatar in the early hours as they prepare to play their
first World Cup Finals match for 64 years.
Thursday, 17 November 2022 - The Welsh team have rescheduled their
training today in order to cope with the searing Qatari heat. They were due to
begin at 11.30am local time, but with temperatures exceeding 30C, Wales will now
train at 4pm at their Al-Sadd base, which they share with the Japanese team.
Joe Allen, who has not played since September and is a doubtful starter for the
match against United States on Monday, joined in for part of the session before
training alone with a member of the medical staff.
Sunday, 20 November 2022 - Welsh First
Minister Mark Drakeford meets the Wales Squad in Al-Sadd. The only players not
involved in the main training session are the three goalkeepers and Joe Allen.
The hamstring injury is preventing Allen from having any part in Wales' opening
match against the United States tomorrow.
Monday, 21 November 2022 - Wales and other European nations will not wear the OneLove
armband at the World Cup in Qatar because of the threat of players
being booked. The
captains of nine countries, including Gareth Bale, had planned to wear the armband to promote
diversity and inclusion. A joint
statement from seven Football Associations said they could not put
their players "in a position where they could face sporting
sanctions. We are very
frustrated by the Fifa decision which we believe is unprecedented,"
the statement read. The governing
bodies said they had written to Fifa in September informing them about
the OneLove armband but not received a response. "Fifa has been
very clear that it will impose sporting sanctions if our captains wear
the armbands on the field of play. We were
prepared to pay fines that would normally apply to breaches of kit
regulations and had a strong commitment to wearing the armband. However, we
cannot put our players in the situation where they might be booked or
even forced to leave the field of play." In response,
Fifa has brought forward its own "No Discrimination" campaign,
which had been due to start from the quarter-finals. Captains will
now be permitted to wear a No Discrimination armband for the duration
of the tournament. 9.45pm United States1
Wales 1 - Gareth Bale rode
to Wales' rescue once again as the captain's late penalty salvaged a draw
against the United States in his country's first World Cup game for 64 years. Wales were listless and overrun in a first half dominated by a vibrant USA
team, who led as Tim Weah finished smartly after a surging run and
pass by Christian Pulisic. The half-time
introduction of striker Kieffer Moore revitalised Wales, whose newfound
energy and purpose turned a one-sided affair into a genuine contest as Ben
Davies and Moore both came close to equalising. Then with nine
minutes left, the hitherto anonymous Bale was clattered in the box by
Walker Zimmerman before confidently whipping his penalty into the net to
send the travelling Welsh supporters behind that goal into raptures. Wales finished the
game strongly, buoyed to have secured a point on their long-awaited World
Cup return when they had appeared to be heading for a defeat which would
have left them staring at an early exit from the competition.
Wednesday, 23 November 2022 - Joe Allen
has returned to full training, joining in the rest of the squad in All-Sadd.
Friday, 25 November 2022 - Wales 0 Iran 2
- Wales' first
World Cup for 64 years looks set to end at the first hurdle after they suffered
a heartbreaking - but deserved - last-ditch defeat against Iran in Qatar. Substitute
Rouzbeh Cheshmi struck from 20 yards deep into added time, before
Ramin Rezaeian finished off a counter-attack to seal victory for a
revitalised Iran side who have renewed hope of reaching the knockout
stages for the first time in their history. As they did in
their opening draw with the United States, Wales started poorly and had
VAR to thank for disallowing a goal from Iran's Ali Gholizadeh for
offside. In one of the
most highly-charged atmospheres of this World Cup, Iran's players sang
their anthem this time - having refused to do so before their opening loss
to England in an apparent show of support for anti-government protests in
their country - but their own fans booed the anthem and some could be seen
crying in the stands. Roared on by the
fervent and almost entirely Iranian crowd, Carlos Queiroz's side were
extremely unlucky not to score early in the second half as Sardar Azmoun
and Gholizadeh both struck the post within the space of a few seconds. Wales were
utterly ragged and, as they pushed forward in search of the late winning
goal they desperately needed, a long ball over the top left the defence
exposed and their onrushing goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey was sent off -
after a VAR check - for a reckless challenge on Mehdi Taremi. That set the seal
on Wales' fate for this match and, in all likelihood, their hopes of
reaching the second round. While Robert
Page's men were just as disjointed as they were against the USA, Iran were
unrecognisable from the team thrashed 6-2 by England in their first match
and fully deserved this win which breathes new life into their ambitions
of progressing to the last 16. Wales now face
the formidable challenge of needing to win their final group match on
Tuesday against England, who take on the United States later on Friday.
