Diary
Sunday, 13 August 2023 - Roberto
Mancini has resigned as manager of Italy after five years in charge.
"The Italian Football Federation announces that it has taken note of the
resignation of Roberto Mancini from the position of coach of the Italian
national team, received late yesterday evening, "the Italian Football
Federation (FIGC) said. "Thus concludes
a significant page in the history of the Azzurri, which began in May 2018
and concluded with the 2023 Nations League Finals; in between, the victory
at Euro 2020, a triumph conquered by a group in which all the individuals
have known how to become a team".
Friday, 18 August 2023 - Italy
have named former Napoli boss Luciano Spalletti as their new manager. Spalletti,
64, left Napoli in the summer after guiding the club to their first
Serie A title in 33 years. He had planned to
take a year-long sabbatical but has now decided to make a swift return to
football. The Italian
Football Federation (FIGC) said Spalletti would take charge from 1
September. "The national
team needed a great coach and I'm very happy that he accepted," FIGC
president Gabriele Gravina said. "His enthusiasm
and his expertise will be fundamental for the challenges that await Italy
in the coming months."
6.00pm, Friday, 6 October 2023 - Head
Coach Luciano Spalletti has announced his second Italian squad, a 27-man
squad to take on Malta and England next week.
Monday, 9 October 2023 - After picking
up minor injuries over the weekend, Ivan Provedel and Mattia Zaccagni will
not be joining up with the rest of the Italy squad. However, Bologna's
Riccardo Orsolini has been called up by Luciano Spalletti as their
replacement.
The Azzurri report for their first training session at the Federal
Technical Center in Coverciano. Italy trained this afternoon.
Wednesday, 11 October 2023 - Italy's
preparations for their two Eruo qualifiers continued at Coverciano. The
players trained on the Vittorio Pozzo pitch. All players trained, except
Federico Chiesa, who was following a personalised recovery programme. They
were, however, joined by Fiorentina goalkeeper Tommasso Vanucchi.
Watching on from the sidelines was UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin, as
well as FIGC President Gabriele Gravina. Ceferin was then presented with a
personalised Azzurri shirt.
Thursday, 12 October 2023 - The Italian Federation have announced that the
Turin Public Prosecutor's Office has conducted investigations into Sandro
Tonali and Nicoló Zaniolo. The English-based players are training
at Coverciano. The Federation has decided that the two players are not in
a mental state to play football and have returned them to their respective
clubs after being accused of possible illegal betting in Serie A. Juventus'
Nicolo Fagioli was the first to be implicated in the investigation and he
admitted involvement when speaking to prosecutors, willingly handing over
his mobile phone.
Friday, 13 October 2023
- In response to the withdrawal of Tonali and Zaniolo, Luciano Spalletti
has drafted in Roma's left-winger Stephen El Shaarawy and Torino's Samuel
Ricci.
