Background |
The fifteenth European Championship Finals were awarded to France on
28 May 2010 at the UEFA Executive Committee meeting in Genève.
There were four initial representations
bidding for the right to host the 2016 Tournament. However, in December
2009, due to a lack of political support, the joint-bid from Sweden and
Norway was withdrawn. So in May 2010, after Italy were eliminated after
the first round of voting, the French and Turkish bids went to a second
round of votes.
France gained seven votes, and Turkey
gained six.
For Turkey this was the third consecutive time they
had suffered the heartache of missing out after losing the right to
stage Euro 2008 to Switzerland and Austria and 2012 to Ukraine and
Poland.
