Match Report
by Norman Giller |
Italy scored their first ever win in England when Capello netted the only
goal of the match in the eighty-seventh minute, steering the ball
into the net after Peter Shilton had parried a shot from Chinaglia.
England dominated the match for long periods but could not find a way
through Italy's superbly organized defence. Veteran Italian playmaker
Gianni Rivera was the outstanding player on the pitch, continually slicing
open the England defence with a procession of precise passes. The match
marked the hundred and eighth and final appearance of Bobby Moore,
arguably the greatest England defender of all time.
