Club Career

Club(s) Started his career at Edge Hill Boys Club in Liverpool, before Tranmere Rovers FC signed him in July 1966. Brian Clough's Derby County FC signed him for £24,000 on 25 August 1967. He became the lynchpin of the Baseball Ground defence, playing in 434 league matches, scoring 44, until he joined Bradford City AFC in May 1981 as their player-manager, playing in forty league matches, scoring once. He returned to Derby as their player-manager, playing in eight league matches, but with his latter career plagued by injury, he retired from playing at the end of the 1983-84 season.

Management Career

Club(s) He began his managerial career as Bradford City AFC's player-manager from May 1981. He re-joined Derby County FC as team player-manager in November 1982, and then becoming Arthur Cox's assistant at County from June 1984, before taking over as manager from October 1993 to summer of 1995, when he took over at Premier League side Bolton Wanderers FC, until his sacking in January 1986. He returned to management with Cambridge United FC in December 1996 until his sacking on 27 February 2001. Torquay United FC followed in July 2001 until April 2002. In June 2003, he took over the hot-seat at Chesterfield FC until 12 March 2007. He became Burton Albion's caretaker manager after Nigel Clough left on 6 January 2009 until the end of the season, guiding them into the Football League.

On 25 March 1970, Sir Alf Ramsey announced a 28-man provisional squad to take to Mexico. Sir Alf named a further twelve reserves, who were inoculated and received medical certificates for one simple reason; any one of them could be called in an emergency.  Those given 'reserve' status included Roy McFarland.
