    Match Report by Mike Payne

    Match Report by Norman Giller

A long-range shot from Norman Hunter in the forty-second minute beat his Leeds team-mate Gary Sprake in the Welsh goal to salvage a World Cup point. John Toshack had given Wales the lead in the twenty-third minute after clever approach play by Leighton James, and England's forwards floundered against a Welsh defence in which Sprake, Peter Rodrigues and Mike England were outstanding. It was a disastrous point for England to drop on the way to the World Cup finals, and there was a much tougher obstacle ahead in the shape of Poland.
